Runway beats range.
Almost every charter enquiry starts with range. Almost every charter problem ends with a runway.
A Gulfstream G650ER will fly 7,500 nautical miles. Aspen is 1,503 nautical miles from Teterboro. On range alone the aircraft is absurdly over-qualified for the trip, and a broker who sorts by range will offer it. It cannot land there. Aspen caps wingspan at 95 feet; the G650ER spans 99.6.
That is not an edge case. It is the normal shape of the problem. Range is the number in the brochure, so it is the number people compare — but on a domestic US trip almost every aircraft above light-jet size has more range than the mission needs. What varies, and what actually removes aircraft from your list, is the geometry at each end.
The three constraints that matter
1. Published field limitations
Some airports publish a hard limit, and it is absolute. Aspen/Pitkin County restricts aircraft to a 95 ft wingspan and a 100,000 lb maximum landing weight on dual wheels. Teterboro prohibits any aircraft over 100,000 lb actual gross weight from landing, taking off or taxiing, and requires prior permission.
These are not performance guidelines you can negotiate with a lighter fuel load. They are conditions of use. An aircraft that exceeds them does not go, and any quote that includes it is wrong before it is sent.
2. Runway length against balanced field length
Every aircraft publishes a balanced field length: the runway it needs at maximum takeoff weight, at sea level, in standard conditions, to either stop after an engine failure or continue the takeoff. A Citation CJ3+ needs about 3,180 ft. A Gulfstream G550 needs about 5,910 ft. Aspen has 8,006 ft, so on paper both fit.
3. Field elevation, which quietly undoes the second one
Thin air produces less thrust and less lift, so the takeoff run lengthens with elevation. Aspen sits at 7,820 ft. As a planning approximation we add about 9% to the balanced field length per 1,000 ft of field elevation — which turns the G550's 5,910 ft into roughly 10,000 ft against 8,006 ft available.
That does not mean a G550 never goes to Aspen. It means it does not go at maximum takeoff weight. It goes with less fuel, fewer passengers, or a stop — and that is a conversation to have before you book, not after. On this site those aircraft are marked restricted rather than excluded, with the numbers shown, because the distinction is the whole point.
What this means when you are buying
- Ask for the runway analysis, not the aircraft list. Any broker can send you six aircraft. Ask which of them clear the destination at your actual passenger and baggage load, on the day, and what the fallback is.
- Mountain fields are a different trip. Aspen, Eagle, Jackson Hole, Telluride and Sun Valley all combine short-ish runways, terrain and altitude. Summer afternoons are the worst case, because heat compounds altitude.
- The second airport is often the answer. Eagle County is 9,000 ft of runway at 6,548 ft, about 70 miles from Aspen by road. For a heavy jet in July that trade is frequently the right one.
- A quote without a stated aircraft is not a quote. "Midsize jet, $22,000" tells you nothing about whether it lands.
How this site handles it
Every route page filters the fleet against both ends before pricing anything. An aircraft blocked by a published limit is struck through with the limit quoted. An aircraft that needs more runway than the field has at that elevation is marked restricted with both numbers shown. Nothing is hidden to keep a list looking longer.
